Surrounded by sprawling parkland, Sofia, the capital and largest city of the Bulgaria, lies at the foot of popular ski mountain, Vitosha. Sofia is one of Europe’s oldest, most compact and walkable cities. While most travelers opt to skip Sofia on their way to the coast or ski resorts, stopping by for a day or two is something you must consider. Sofia happens to be Europe’s most affordable capital. The city is full of delightful surprises, from the yellow brick roads in its historic center to the partially exposed, 1,800-year-old Roman city that lies beneath. Having said that, hard-up pensioners and disabled people begging on the street are not an uncommon sight, but most Sofians have hope for the future of their city. Probably the most enjoyable to walk is pedestrian-only Vitosha Boulevard which is lined with outdoor cafes and some international brands.
